What is Quantum GIS for Mac. QGIS is a free and open-source geographic information system. QGIS aims to be an easy to use GIS, providing common functions and features. The initial goal was to provide a GIS data viewer. QGIS has reached that point in its evolution and is being used by many for their daily GIS data viewing and editing needs.

The installation is separated into a few installer packages, and components shared with other software or that are useful by themselves are installed outside the QGIS application. QGIS 3 uses Python 3.9, it does NOT use any other Python distribution. QGIS is the leading Free and Open Source Desktop GIS. It allows you to create, edit, visualise, analyse and publish geospatial information on Windows, Mac OS, Linux, BSD and Android (via the QField app). We also provide an OGC Web Server application, a web browser client and developer libraries.
For new users we recommend the standalone installers.
For more advanced QGIS users you can use OSGeo4W packages, which make itpossible to install several versions in parallel.
The OSGeo4W repository contains a lot of software from OSGeo projects.QGIS and all dependencies are included, along with Python, GRASS, GDAL, etc.The installer is able to install from internet or just download all neededpackages beforehand.The downloaded files are kept in a local directory for future installations.Steps are:

Note
Don’t blindly do a full install of OSGeo4W. Only install QGIS andmaybe other components you like. Dependencies will be includedautomatically. A full install pulls in components that require third partyadditions, which need to be installed manually. These components render theinstallation unusable without those additions.

In the installer choose Desktop Express Install and select QGIS to install the latest release.
To get the long term release (that is not also the latest release) choose Advanced Install and select qgis-ltr-full

Installation instructions are in the Read Me on the disk image. These packages use the python.org Python 3, version 3.6, the 'macosx10.9' build - other distributions are not supported. Install Python before installing QGIS.
